Let´s
start with your new album. What can you tell us about "Creative Killings
" , songs, release date,
artist cover...?
The
cover is done by Jon Zig who also made covers for Deeds Of Flesh
and Houwitser. It's the most sick cover we ever had. The release
date is october 1 2001 in Europe and I think a little later in the states
and other countries. The new material is what you can expect from a SINISTER
album. Fast, brutal and catchy. Personally I see it a s a mix between
Aggressive Measures and Hate. But some people told me it sounds like the
first ,Cross the Styx'.
It came to a surprise the decision to have Rachel on vocals. Do you think
Rachel will bring the stability
you haven´t found with the singers you´ve had ?
Let's
hope so. She is very motivated and her death-grunt fits very well with
our music. The advantage is that we already know her for a long time,
so I'm very positive about the future.
What´s Rachel input in the new album ?
Just the vocals. Aad and Bart made the music while I did the
lyrics. That's the way how we work since years from now.
Has the fact of Rachel being a woman brought
any special situation adapting as the new singer for SINISTER?
No, not
really. It was a bit strange for the people to see SINISTER
perform with a girl on stage. But after amazing everybody with her vocals,
everybody liked it.
What are your thoughts on your almost 10 years under Nuclear blast?
Well, we
aren't on the label anymore, but I have a very positive vibe over the
last ten years. We only changed label, because it was time for something
different. There were no argues at all. We choose Hammerheart because
they still believe in Death Metal and are able to put a lot of time in
our band.

After
making so much money off death metal , and bands like sinister during
the 90´s, now Nuclear
Blast turns its back on you. What do you think ?
They didn't
dropped us. They offered us a new contract, but we would rather go to
Hammerheart, because we think it is a step forward for SINISTER.
We get more attention and we are one of the priority bands for them.
Why
has it been so hard to keep a steady line up over the past few years ?
I wish I
knew. The problem with lots of singers is there ego. It's bigger than
their brains, haha! I'm a member since '97 so the only problem we had
was the one with singers. The bad thing is that it slows you done in making
records and touring. Our last album was released in '98. We could have
made a new album sooner with a steady line-up. Let's hope we have one
now.
What can you tell us about the period of time
when the black metal trend was so huge? how did SINISTER
withstand as one of the most important bands in holland ?
Very
simple. Believe in your ideas concerning music. Stay true to your own
music style and fuck every existing trend and it's followers. SINISTER
is Death Metal and the day we decide to stop playing death metal is the
day that sinister stops playing at all.
What do you think happened to bans like GOREFEST
or ENTOMBED music wise, have you any contact with
they these days ?
They
wimped out. Gorefest is the most trend following band in the world
and they failed. There albums didn't sell at all anymore so they stopped
their band. We have no contact with Entombed, but I only like their
first three albums, the rest sucks!
Going back in time. is ther any chance of re-relasing
old material like the "Perpetual Damnation"demo
or your split with monastery?
No, what's done is
done!
|
Which
of the founding members are still with SINISTER?
Aad, our drummer! Bart is a member since '92.
What ever happened with the Godly beings"
project, which featured members of SINISTER?.
We made one tape and that was it. We are all to busy with Sinister
and Houwitser to continue that project.
iIs sinister allegiance solely to brutality and
agression in its music ? have you ever thought about
a more progressive sound
NOOOOOOO!
it´s
my opinion that your lyrics have changed from ocult and satanic, to horror
and dark subjects.
what do you think ?
Yes,
that's true. Mike, our former vocalist wrote the lyrics on the first three
albums and the mini cd ,Bastard Saints'. After his departure, I wrote
the lyrics. And my interests lays in other stuff. The new lyrics will
continue in those themes.
What
do you think about internet..and some programs like mp3 ? do you have
any problem with people "Downloading" Sinister songs from the
web.
I
would rather that they buy it, haha! But I have no real problems with
it. It's not really my stuff, because I prefer to buy an album if I like
it. With everything on it, cover, lyrics, pictures, lay out, etc.
But if people rather download the songs on the web, go ahead. But don't
forget to buy a t-shirt afterwards, haha!
SINISTER has shared stage with lots of bands.
do you have special memories of playing in the same stage with any particular
band ?
No, not really.
Do
you believe in modern death metal ? has originality been put away ?I
think the new death metal scene is better than in the early '90. It's
less a trend and the bands of this time are excellent. I'm positive about
the death metal future.
Final
words
Thanks
for the interview
