Hails
Phil talk us about your new album ENVENOMED . Has it gotten the same or
a better acceptance as the great FINE ART OF MURDER
I think more people seem to like the new cd."Envenomed" a little more
than "The fine Art.." cd. because it is probably a bit more brutal and
straight forward. Less experimental, better production. We are all very
happy with Envenomed also, but still thinf The Fine Art is a killer too!!!
Brutality and speed are still present on ENVENOMED
, but i also detect some swedish death sound, more melody in the guitars?
Why your move towards that sound?
We didn't lean toward any specific sound,we only had limited time
to write, reherse and record together because we all live so far from
each other. So we wrote the best song's we could with the time we had.A
lot of styles came out of us i suppose. We are fans of all that is extreme!
What is it like to work with producer JEREMY
STASKA? did he produce HATE PLOW`s album? What other bands has he worked?
Jeremy Staske recorded Hate Plow's "The Only Law Is Survival"
with us and we decided to record the newest Malevolent Creation album
there as well. He has been recording band's from South Florida for over
10 year's and we gave him a try and everything seem's to work well working
with him.
You have re-recorded 3 songs, 2 were taken from
87' and 88' demos and the other is a cover of DARK ANGEL's "Perished
in Flames". Why didn't you include these songs in ENVENOMED and did
include them in ARTIC MUSIC's comp.?
Yes we just finished the recording of 3 bonus track's which
are "Confirmed Kill"(From our debut 87 demo),"Epileptic Siezure"(From
our 89 demo) and a cover of Dark Angel's "Perish In Flames".The demo song's
have a definate early Kreator/Slayer vibe to them, and the Dark Angel song
just crushes!!!!
Going back to early days of MALEVOLENT CREATION,
do you remember the death metal scene back then ? Was it just starting?
Were you one of the pioneer bands?
We started back in 87 in Buffalo,NY and us and a few other
band's which eventually became Cannibal Corpse were the only band's i
can remember playing thrash back then in Buffalo.
We moved to Ft.Lauderdale, Fl in 88 and kind of started a death/thrash
scene, but up in Tampa, Florida other band's like Obituary and Death
and Morbid Angel were all about to release album's and we were
fortunate enough to be around when all this happened and were signed and
we still continue to this day.
You released three demos from 87 to 91 when you
released your first album "TEN COMMANDMENTS" , which bands influenced
you in those three demos?
|
Slayer,
Kreator, Sodom, Exodus, Destruction, Venom, Metallica, back then music
like this was fresh and new to all of us!!!
Which the early days bands are you still friends with? Which of them achieved
recognition and which others just died without the glory?
I am still friend's with all the band's i have
met and toured with like, Cannibal Corpse, Monstrosity, Deicide, Morbid
Angel. It seem's all Florida band's are generally very cool and mellow!!!
You had the oportunity to witness the golden
era of bands like DEATH, MORBID ANGEL ,DEICIDE, OBITUARY, which impressed
you the most ? Do you keep contact with them?
I still see the guy's from those band's every once in a while,
and it is nice to run into each other after all these year's of Death
Metal and have a drink and talk about the old day's!
Why do you movet from N.Y to Florida? Was it
the death metal scene down there? Or you just got plain bored in N.Y?
We were bored living in Buffalo,NY,and
i had some family that lived in South Florida and i used to visit ther
and i just thought it was a lot better than Buffalo. I never imagined
it would be the capital of Death Metal
Roadrunner released your first album, why did you break up with the label
?
They dropped us after our 3rd album "Stillborn was released.
Of all your 7 albums, which has gone through
the most trouble to get done?
Stillborn was a fucking nightmare!!!!!!
Your lyrics have gone through changes,
your album title shown these changes, what has influenced such changes?
Do you have Some antireligious songs?
The most anti-religious thing we have ever had in our lyric's is probably
the song "Thou Shall Kill" from The Ten Commandment's album. Other than
that our lyric's strictly deal with the topic of death!!!
You also too had some trouble with one of the
lyrics on Eternal" Specificaly the line "fuck you niggers"
from the song "They Breed"
It's old news, and no we are not a racist band!!!!
Jason Blachowicks takes
over the vocals on the ETERNAL album, replacing BRETT HOFFMAN , he was
on bass during the three previous works. Did Jason write the lyrics for
ETERNAL? Why did you choose him to handle vocals? Did Brett leave because
of problems with the band?
Brett had some personal problem's after we recorded Stillborn and instead
of finding a new singer Jason stepped up. We didn't really want to bring
someone new into our band at that time. Yeah he wrote the majority of
the lyric's.
|
Lets
talk about your "Joe Black" Mcd. What does the name mean? Why
is it so little known? What are the lyrics about?
Joe Black is Jason's father actually. The song Joe Black is
about Jason's abusive father!!!
FINE ART OF MURDER marks the return of BRETT HOFFMAN and
it's sort of a "MALEVOLENT CREATION" revival, even when "IN
Cold Blood" had been a great album. Do you think Brett's return had
a lot to do with it?
Yes definately! Brett's voice has alway's been a big part of
the Malevolent Creation sound and we sound like Malevolent Creation again.
MANISFESTATION was double cd did you want to
make this a special ocassion by releasing it that way?
Manifestation was Pavement's idea,we didn't really want that
to come out.If we were going to put out a best of disc it should contain
music from all our album's,not just 3 of them.
Tell us about your shows in VENEZUELA and PUERTO
RICO
Both those show's were awesome, and i wish we could go back
there to play again!!!!
Lets talk a little about of ARTIC MUSIC, you're
the vicepresident right? How was the label started? Are there members
of other bands involved in the label?
Arctic was started by me and our manager Scott Hecker. It was
Scott's idea for a while, and when Malevolent Creation's contract was up
we decided to give it a try. So far everything is doing fine and we are
starting to build up a roster of killer band's now.
Why isn't ARTIC RECS oriented solely to death
metal ? Why do you have black metal bands on your catalogue?
We are open to any style's of metal as long as it is intense!!
What new bands are you planning signing? Any
South American bands on your catalogue?
We have signed Kult Ov Azazel(Florida),Burner(Florida),Homo
Iratus(Greece) and a few we are negotiating with right now.
How is the relationship between ARTIC MUSIC group
and PAVEMENT MUSIC? Are they encharged of distribution and you're of recruiting?
Pavement market's and distributes all Arctic releases and we
have a good working relationship with them now.
Speaking of label , not too long ago Century
Media and Nuclear Blast merged. Aren't you worried about the monopoly
slowly growing in the metal industry?
It doesn't really concern me,so i don't give a shit!
O.K Phil tanks for your answers, good luck on
your tour , any final words?
Thanx for the interview, check out our website :
If you know any honest promoter's interested in bringing Malevolent
Creation to South America, have them contact me.We would really love to
come back there!!!!!!!
