1.Greetings Cab Castervall, can you give us a brief bio of your
band?
Hypnosia founded in the summer of 1995 by Cab Castervall (Myself,
guitar/vocals) and Michael Sjöstrand (drums). We wanted to start a fresh, new thrash and
death metal band with lots of aggressive feelings and fast metal all the way. Later in the
autumn we got a stable line-up and started to make some songs which we later would record.
In December we played the first gig her in Sweden. Växjö.
In April 1996 we recorded the first demo "Crushed Existence" and it features
four tracks of pounding thrash/death. It was too death metal for our taste, while we
wanted a crispy and crunchy thrash metal sound. After the release of "Crushed"
we played some shows in Sweden to support the demo.
In December 1996 w again entered the studio to record demo #2. This demo contains three
tracks and is called "The Storms 1997". The new demos has been reviewed in more
than 50 zines all over the world and it has gained Hypnosia a lot of popularity the
underground in most countries of the world. The amount of letters, orders, interviews and
reviews has been very big and we are of course very thankful to all thrashers and metal
people who has supported us this far, Cheers! This demo had more thrash metal sound and
weve more pleased with the sound on this demo than on "Crushed". Following
the release of "Storms" came a lot of line-up trouble, and it was only fairly
recently we could start to rehearse as usual again. Line-up 1998 is: Cab (Guitar/vocals),
Sjöstrand (drums), Carl-Petter Berg (guitar) and Johan Orre (bass) A promo will soon be
recorded to be sent to the zines and labels we have had most contact with during the
years.
2From your demo "The Storms 1997" give more details and how was the response?
"The Storms 1997" was released in February 1997
and around the same time we started to send out this cassette to quite many different
zines in every country imaginable. As I said in the previous question, this demo has
been reviewed in more than 50 zines, and the response has been very, very good. Out
of all reviews only one or two have been bad (or rather: not as good as the others). As a
conclusion, you could say that very many people in the metal underground are missing fast
and aggressive thrash/death without compromises and performed with deep convictions and
tight playing. We can deliver that, thats why such a great number of zines have
given high grades in their demo sections.
As a result of "Storms" demo we have been offered a good gigs with
"big" bands, which is a must if you want to become a name in this style of
metal.
3.I was read in the S.O.D magazine (USA) that Hypnosia
recently was signed for S.O.D Recs.? and how do you feel with the 10 fucking skulls for
your demo
It was of course very good for the
band to get two "10 fucking Skulls" reviews. Its one of the worlds biggest
Death Metal Magazines and its very well done with everything. When I first got to
know we had received the highest score in SOD I was proud. It was a picture and
everything, which was cool. No, were not signed with Sounds of Death.
|
We were supposed to sign them, but both parts agreed to cancel
it, as hes very busy with his magazine an all. Both him and us in the band though it
would be better to find a label who only concentrates on the band, pressing CDs,
printing merchandise, doing advertising, setting up interviews and so on.As it is now,
well release a mini-CD on Iron First Production (Sweden). So far IFP has released
two 7" by Merciless (two old demos re-released). Before the founder of IFP owned and
ran the now very famous label, No Fashion. We know that hes able to release pure
quality, both regarding the layout of the CD, the sound, as well as distribution
world-wide. Hes got many contacts and with release of a Hypnosia mini-CD in late
summer 1998, we will reach a bigger audience. the CD will include 5 new thrashers and the
style on the music is similar to that on the demos. But there is a little
difference, now its faster and performed tighter with higher technical abilities
than before. This mini-CD will be really special, believe me! TOTAL FUCKING THRASH!!!
4.Has the band played some shows in Sweden, did you
receive a good response from the underground people?
Yes, we have played 6 times here in
Sweden and all of them has been good. But you have to know that crowds here in Sweden are
not wild and crazy. They stand and listen and headbang. Thats about it. No big
mosh-pits or stage-diving. We have played with bands like Satanic Slaughter, Necrophobic,
Cardinal Sin, Inverted, Dark Tranquility, Exhumation (Greece), Arch Enemy, Mindcollapse. I
enjoy playing live, it makes me feel good. Its cool to se peoples faces and their
reactions when we play our brutal thrash metal. We are very aggressive on stage, and we
bang our head very hard. Weve heard many people who are impressed with Hypnosia
live..
5.are you influenced by the Sweden Style music or believe to
be different ?
Were influenced by some
Swedish bands, but we do not sound like most new bands do. They play either Modern Black
Metal or Melodic "Death" Metal (like In Flames, Dark Tranquility). We have our
roots deep into the 80s Heavy, Thrash, Speed, Black, Death Metal, there are not many
new bands who really impress me any more. We create music that we enjoy playing and we
create music we would like to hear ourselves and such music wed like to buy on
LP/CD. Other Swedish bands seem not to know the metal history, which I think is important
to know.
6.What bands inspire your music and and what is mos important
for you the lirics or the music?
Im inspired by bands like Slayer, Sadus, Kreator, Death,
Sodom, Dark Angel, old Sepultura, Sacrifice (Canada) and bands similar to them. When I
hear bands like those I mentioned, it makes me wanna pick and play the guitar for ever!
Regarding the lyrics Im inspired by practically everything that is around me. Books,
movies, newspapers, everyday life, work and feelings like hate and aggression. On the
demos there has been many lyrics about fiction, like future wars. Now the lyrics are more
dealing with the feelings I mentioned.
|
But on the whole, the lyrics are not that important to me.Music
is 99% and lyrics 1%.All of the band only listen to real metal like the bands I mentioned
above and also bands like Destruction, Bathory, Morbid Angel,Exodus, Razor, Asphyx,
Possessed, Venom, Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, Helloween, Running Wild, Mercyful Fate/King
Diamond, Iron Maiden, Manowar and so on.
7.What is your opinion about of Black Metal , do you feel
threatened by his popularity?
I do certainly not feel threatened by Black Metal and the people
involved with tat style of music. The music we play has got the same feeling as the old
Black and Thrash Metal bands, all the new Black Metal Bands coming up nowadays lack the
true metal feeling. As with all new waves, some bands are good and most are crap
The few innovators and the many follower
8.For you what is the best zine that you has read?
The best zines Ive read all carry bands I like. They should
be well written with cool layout, and be honest in the demo and album reviews. Also
contain logos and pictures, biography and discography. Some zines I really like
reading are Voices of The Dark Side (Germany), Necrologium (Sweden), Putrefaction
(Sweden), Mighty mag (Denmark), Tales of the Macabre (Germany), Headfucker (Italy).
9.Do you follw any philosie in particular?
All members of Hypnosia follows the Gods of
Heavy Metal. Very early in our lives we sold our souls to metal. We think, live, breathe
metal. When we are not rehearsing or working, we listen to albums and drink beer and bang
our heads. We do not follow any weak religion, the feeble sheep of Christ and other
religions just suck. We hate religion!10.Your
favorite writer and movie?
Favorite writer of books is J.R.R. Tolkien.
Those books are incredibly good and well written. Favorite movie? At the moment Im
very impressed by the sheer perversion of the film "Cannibal Holocaust".
Its so fucking disgusting, but very enjoyable!11.Some
sexual perversion are fun or not?
Some perversion are fun, but stuff like
people shitting on each other faces are just too much!12:Some
